Salkehatchie Program Fixes Up Homes for Needy – High school and college students as well as many adults participated in rebuilding homes and replacing roofs as part of a summer camp through the state United Methodist Conference. The group of young people and adults are working in the Salkehatchie Summer Service to fix up four homes in the Midlands. They pay $215 each to serve the ministry. Cayce United Methodist Church Pastor Mike Henderson was busy going house to house working with the youth and making sure they had all the materials they needed. His church helps by feeding and housing them for the week. Henderson said, “It teaches people they can do more than they thought they could” of the ministry.

Lexington County Peach Festival Activities and Pageant Contests – On Monday, July 4th, the 2011 Lexington County Peach Queen will be crowned in the 7 pm pageant. Five young women from Lexington County will be competing for the title. Through the efforts of community volunteers, the Peach Festival is a great family event, offering a full day of fun on July 4th. Concessions will be available in Gilbert Community Park as early as 8:30 am. Plate lunches will be available starting at 11 am, and certain food and drink items will be served until 11 pm. Other foods that will be served include BBQ pork, chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, and almost anything peach related including milkshakes, cobbler and tea. Entertainment will begin at 9 am, the parade at 9:30 am, and a fireworks show at 10pm.
