Amazon friends win 12th hour vote – It looked like it might take all night but finally happened. State senators agreed after midnight last Friday morning May 27, to give internet retailer Amazon a sale tax break. The vote appeared to turn on a compromise. The company agreed to notify all S.C. buyers that they owe sales tax on their online purchases. This fell short of a S.C. Chamber of Commerce proposal that Amazon notify the state Revenue Dept. of all SC purchases. Proponents said they expect no problem when the tax break goes back to the House which had earlier approved the bill. The agreement saves 2,000 promised jobs and a $125 million Amazon investment in a 1 million square foot distribution center just south of Cayce. Amazon guaranteed 1,500 of those jobs would be permanent with health benefits through 2016.

Finally – collards become state’s leafy vegetable – It took persuasion. But collard greens lovers prevailed in the House of Representatives and Gov. Nikki Haley plans to sign it into state law. On a bill from Sen. Jake Knotts of Lexington County, the House agreed to name the popular collard S.C.’s official leafy vegetable. The proposal first came from Rocky Creek Elementary School 3rd grader, Mary Grace Wingard, daughter of Charles and Jan Wingard of Gilbert. She wrote Sen. Knotts asking for his help. Knotts bill was approved by fellow senators but questions in a House committee last week delayed a vote. Mary Grace, Sen. Knotts and other collard champions called on House committee members. “You have to educate some people,” Knotts said.

Proud to be a Marine – Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter talked pride last week aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston. He responded to an award presented to him as an American Hero. The wounded combat veteran talked of pride in the Marines, in family, American military, Americans in general and pride in American history. The Wyman King graduate is still going through almost weekly surgeries since being wounded in Afghanistan. “I’ve gotten the best care imaginable,” he told the Chronicle.

Measure Success

You can't manage what you don't measure. It is an old management adage that is accurate today. Unless you measure something you don't know if it is getting better or worse. You can't manage for improvement if you don't measure to see what is getting better and what isn't. This article will help you know what to measure and how.
